Why builders specify a gear drive
A gear-driven winch is a specification difference a buyer can feel on the first load, which makes it a straightforward upgrade tier on a build sheet. It also shifts the tensioning method away from the winch bar, which matters to fleet safety managers evaluating trailers.
Mechanically the fitment is unchanged: the sliding models mount in standard C-channel and L-track, so no trailer redesign is required.

Weld-on for decks without track
Builders producing decks with no cargo track use the weld-on model, which mounts directly to the frame rail. Because position is fixed once welded, anchor spacing has to be set at design time — work it from the § 393.110 tie-down count for the longest article the trailer is rated to carry.
