The three questions these answer
How do I operate it? The operating instructions cover the full cycle, the visual gap check that tells you whether a winch is locked, and the one troubleshooting item that accounts for most support emails — the small handwheel refusing to turn, which is normal behaviour rather than a fault.
How many do I need? Two independent tests in 49 CFR Part 393 decide this, and a load has to pass both. The § 393 guide works through an example where the tie-down count rule, not capacity, sets the answer.
What is it rated at? WLL 6,600 lb (3,000 kg) on every winch model, with a separate 2.5 ton tensioning limit. Those two figures get confused often enough that there is a page explaining why they are different.
