WLL vs Breaking Strength

Three numbers get confused in cargo securement: working load limit, breaking strength, and tensioning force. Only one of them belongs in a compliance calculation.

Working load limit

Working load limit (WLL) is the maximum load a component is rated to carry in normal service. It is assigned by the manufacturer, marked on the component, and is the figure FMCSA rules use.

Our winches are rated WLL 6,600 lb (3,000 kg). That is the number that goes into the § 393.106(d) aggregate calculation.

Breaking strength

Breaking strength — sometimes minimum breaking strength or ultimate tensile strength — is the load at which a component fails in a destructive test. It is a laboratory figure, not a service rating.

WLL is a fraction of breaking strength. For webbing assemblies the design factor is commonly 3:1, so a strap with a 3:1 factor and 6,600 lb WLL breaks somewhere near 19,800 lb. The margin absorbs shock loading, wear, knots, edge abrasion, UV degradation, and the difference between a laboratory pull and a road.

Why the distinction matters in a roadside inspection

Using breaking strength in the aggregate calculation would overstate your capacity by roughly three times. A load that looks compliant on breaking strength can be substantially under-secured on WLL — which is the figure an inspector applies.

The third number: tensioning force

Our winches carry a tensioning limit of 2.5 tons, separate from the 6,600 lb WLL. These describe different moments:

  • Tensioning force is the pull applied while tightening. Exceeding it can damage the gear set.
  • Working load limit is what the assembly is rated to hold once secured, and what § 393.106(d) uses.

Over-tensioning does not raise the working load limit. It stresses the mechanism without improving compliance.

Rate the assembly, not the winch

A tie-down assembly is rated at its lowest-rated component. Winch, strap, hook, and anchor point all sit in the load path. Pairing a 6,600 lb winch with a 3,335 lb strap produces a 3,335 lb assembly.

When you audit a trailer, check every element — the winch rating alone tells you nothing about the assembly.
